Icelandic Sheep are the oldest pure breed of sheep in the world. They are relatively rare in the United States, but quite abundant in Iceland, accounting for 50% of the meat in the Icelandic diet. Icelandic Sheep are also ideal small farm sheep. They are dual-purpose sheep providing excellent wool and meat. Characteristics, which make them ideal for small farms, include:
1) LAMBING APRIL-JUNE/ AVOID LAMBING IN THE COLD OF WINTER.
2) SMALL LAMB SIZE (5LBS)REDUCE RISK OF LAMBING PROBLEMS.
3) OPP FREE/HIGH DEGREE OF FOOT ROT RESITANCE
4) TAILS ARE NATURALLY SHORT, AVOIDS THE NEED FOR DOCKING
5) MAY BE SHEARED TWICE PER YEAR
6) WILL SHED WOOL IF NOT SHEARED
7) DO WELL ON GRASS ALONE
